Role Purpose:
The Senior Data Privacy and Governance role is essential for ensuring that protects customer data privacy and governs data within the organization, complying with local and international privacy laws and regulations. This position, reporting to the Data Protection Officer and acting as Deputy DPO, will support in identifying, assessing, and managing data privacy and governance risks, implementing necessary controls to mitigate financial and reputational risks, and improving data usage for decision-making.
Key Metrics:
- Number of exceptions granted on data privacy rules to business departments.
- Compliance status with relevant data governance and privacy laws, regulations, and standards.
- Percentage of contracts in compliance with privacy requirements.
- Completeness and validity of critical data sets for data governance and privacy.
- Percentage of data classified according to the classification framework.
- Timeliness of remediation for identified data risks.
Key Accountabilities of the Role:
- Advise on compliance with data privacy and governance regulations.
- Serve as Deputy Data Protection Officer as assigned by the CISO.
- Execute and manage Data Protection Impact Assessments (DPIAs) across business, IT, and cybersecurity teams.
- Ensure timely and quality delivery of privacy-related projects as per the approved budget.
- Create and manage a privacy controls framework, designing monitoring metrics for privacy risk and performance.
- Assist in designing data catalogs, data flow, and data quality for data managers and owners.
- Integrate data privacy and governance frameworks into the enterprise risk framework, including establishing a practical risk appetite for privacy.
- Maintain and seek approvals for roles and responsibilities within the privacy and governance frameworks.
- Monitor compliance of subsidiaries and international businesses with data privacy and governance laws.
- Develop and execute data privacy and governance plans approved by the CISO.
- Drive the implementation of data privacy and governance programs across the organization.
- Build and lead a data privacy and governance unit.
- Establish internal capabilities for data privacy and governance.
- Act as a liaison with internal teams and supervisory authorities to ensure compliance.
- Manage the budget allocated for data privacy and governance initiatives.
- Implement central data privacy controls to achieve compliance with regulatory requirements (e.g., GDPR).
- Evaluate the effectiveness of data privacy and governance activities.
- Conduct DPIAs for significant changes, ensuring privacy by design.
- Monitor adherence to data privacy and governance policies within the organization.
- Ensure timely response to data subjects’ queries regarding their data.
- Liaise with organizations/vendors that process data on behalf of the client.
- Provide consultation on managing privacy breaches and recommend compliance actions.
- Stay updated on changes in laws and regulations, issuing recommendations for compliance.
- Oversee data processing activities, including data identification and classification.
- Automate data privacy and governance management processes where applicable.
- Ensure comprehensive governance of enterprise data assets through effective models and methodologies.
- Approve exception requests and recommend necessary actions.
- Assess the effectiveness of implemented controls and propose mitigations for identified gaps.
- Establish and monitor data quality guidelines and metrics.
- Identify, classify, and document sensitive data to ensure compliance with regulations.
- Review data governance workflows related to data access and retention.
- Lead efforts to implement data governance tools that support data lineage and metadata management.
- Collaborate with risk and compliance teams to align practices with internal policies and external regulations.
- Serve as a subject matter expert, providing guidance and training on data policies.
- Collaborate with external vendors to maintain data governance and privacy standards.
- Participate in audits and assessments related to data governance and compliance.
- Identify gaps in data governance controls and oversee related processes.
- Maintain an inventory of enterprise information maps and authoritative systems.
- Support strategic requirements to reduce data risks and enable business value.
- Oversee management of cross-border and intra-jurisdictional data transfers.
Specialist Skills / Technical Knowledge Required for This Role:
- In-depth knowledge of data privacy regulations and governance frameworks (e.g., GDPR, CCPA).
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with excellent communication abilities.
- Proven experience in data governance, privacy management, and regulatory compliance.
- Ability to manage multiple projects and stakeholders effectively.
- Familiarity with data management technologies and practices.
Previous Experience:
- Minimum 8-10 years in data privacy, governance, compliance, or related fields, preferably in the banking sector.
- Experience with data governance tools and frameworks.
- Strong project management experience, with a focus on data-related initiatives.
